Laurel and Hardy fans are sure to enjoy this send-up of the western genre. In all honesty, this reviewer prefers Way Out West as it has the better story and has better production values. What stands out when one watches them today is how their formula served as a kind of blueprint for future comedy teams such as ‘The Three Stooges’ and for future television sitcoms.Īs for this new collection is concerned, it seems to us that the two included feature length efforts are the main attractions. Their routines establish the child-like Stan Laurel as the bumbling innocent and Oliver Hardy as a pompous blowhard who serves as Stan’s foil. Their “official” film count seems to be a matter of debate between scholars, but Wikipedia cites 34 silent shorts, 45 sound shorts, and 27 full-length feature films (although their official website only lists 23 of these efforts). The duo first worked with one another on a silent short entitled The Lucky Dog in 1921, but this was merely a coincidence as they were not officially established as a duo until their eleventh pairing in The Second Hundred Years in 1927. These became so successful that they were devoting their talents entirely to feature length productions by 1936. However, their success and a changing market eventually allowed the duo to make the occasional feature.
